Case Studies :: Medtronic Distribution

Size: 316,500 S.F.

Type of Construction: This distribution center was constructed with tilt-up panels and structural steel frame. This project had extensive and elaborate conveying and material handling components.

Contract Value: $21,822,517

Challenge: Medtronic is the market leader in spine implants world wide. Their main distribution for these implants originates from Memphis. Linkous Construction has completed ten major projects for this global company over the last fifteen years. Medtronic approached our team and challenged us to design and build a state-of-the-art distribution facility that would be capable of servicing their clients across the globe in the most efficient manner.

Solution: Our Team worked very closely with the Owner, Architect, Engineering Teams and the Material Handling Consultant beginning in the original planning stages throughout construction completion. This collaboration of all team members proved vital to the successful completion of this project. Due to efficiency being the top priority, the automated picking and conveying systems were forefront in the design process. The system was designed to allow automated lift trucks to travel down very narrow aisles of racking without making contact with the 35’ high storage racking layout. Our team suggested pouring a “Super Flat” floor slab in order to accommodate this automation. Additionally, the steel roof structure was designed and built to support the weight of several layers of hanging conveyors throughout the facility.

Bringing all key team members together to challenge aspects of design and foresee potential constructability issues proved to be the most cost effective and efficient delivery method to all involved.
